MICRO-CREDENTIAL IN MORTALITY CODING ESSENTIALS: FROM BASICS TO PROFICIENCY

About this Module

What you will learn

This microcredential course aims to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and rules set by the World Health Organization (WHO) before identifying the cause of death in patients. Mortality coding is a critical aspect of public health, ensuring accurate sequencing of causes of death to produce reliable health statistics. Learners will also be introduced to the international form of the medical certificate of cause of death, which will be used throughout this learning process. The course utilizes a self-paced learning module designed to be engaging, interactive, and educational. The suggested components include interactive videos, downloadable resources, and game-based activities to make learning enjoyable and effective. By the end of this course, learners will have a thorough grasp of the WHO’s mortality coding principles and rules, enabling them to apply this knowledge in their job tasks and reporting purpose.

 Syllabus

This topic refers to the process of translating causes of death from death certificates into standardised codes using systems like ICD-10 or ICD-11. This ensures consistency in health data reporting, enabling accurate analysis of mortality trends across populations and time. It's a vital tool for public health planning and global disease surveillance.

In mortality coding, the General Principle and 3 Selection Rules are guidelines used to identify the underlying cause of death from multiple conditions listed on a death certificate. These rules ensure consistency and accuracy in coding across different cases and countries.

Modification Rules are applied when the standard selection rules (General Principle and 3 Selection Rules) don’t lead to a clear or medically logical underlying cause of death. These rules help adjust or “modify” the selection to ensure consistency and accuracy.
