About this Module
What you will learn
This course critically examines the role of global media in shaping cultural identities, media consumption, and public discourse, with a particular focus on the Malaysian context. It explores how international media flows intersect with local cultural values, identity formation, and audience interpretation, while interrogating the influence of transnational media ownership on national narratives and media representation. Students will develop media literacy skills to analyze how global and local media content reflect or distort issues of race, religion, gender, and class in Malaysia. Through localised case studies, including media regulation, cultural policies, and digital activism, the course equips students to critically engage with media systems, understand Malaysia’s position within global media structures, and advocate for more inclusive and equitable media practices.
