MICRO-CREDENTIAL IN INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT

About this Module

What you will learn

This MC introduces key sustainability concepts and their application within engineering and environmental management. Learners will evaluate the societal and environmental impacts of engineering solutions, utilise modern tools and techniques to address sustainability challenges, and communicate effectively on global and local sustainability issues. The MC also emphasises leadership, ethical responsibility, and teamwork in promoting sustainable development within diverse professional contexts. This MC offers a flexible learning format with no entry prerequisites required. Another associated course is currently under development.

 Syllabus

This chapter introduces environmental management as a systematic discipline applied in engineering and built environment contexts. It establishes what environmental management involves in practice, how it has evolved over time, and what professional and legal obligations it creates for practitioners across all sectors.

Micro Learning Outcomes
LO 1: Define environmental management and explain its scope within engineering and built environment practice, using the input–output model to describe workplace environmental interactions.
LO 2: Describe the evolution of environmental management from reactive pollution response to preventive design, and explain the structure and purpose of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) such as ISO 14001.
LO 3: Identify the legal and professional obligations that require practitioners and organizations to manage environmental impacts, referencing relevant Malaysian regulatory and accreditation frameworks.

This chapter examines sustainability as a concept, a professional framework, and an ethical obligation. It moves from the foundational Brundtland definition through the three-pillar model of sustainability, the distinction between weak and strong sustainability, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the ethical principles of intergenerational equity and the precautionary principle — all as they apply to engineering and built environment practice.

Micro Learning Outcomes
LO 1: Explain the Brundtland definition of sustainability and distinguish between the environmental, economic, and social pillars, illustrating their interactions in an engineering or built environment context.
LO 2: Compare weak and strong sustainability and evaluate trade-offs between natural and human-made capital in engineering scenarios.
LO 3: Identify relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and apply the ethical principles of intergenerational equity and the precautionary principle to professional decision-making.

The principles of environmental management and sustainability are not academic exercises. They are responses to real, measurable, and accelerating environmental crises that affect every country, every industry, and every professional decision. This chapter surveys the major global environmental challenges — climate change, resource depletion, pollution, biodiversity loss, and planetary boundaries — and examines their direct relevance to engineering and built environment practice, with particular attention to the Malaysian context.

Micro Learning Outcomes
LO 1: Identify and describe major global challenges—including climate change, resource depletion, pollution, and biodiversity loss—explaining their mechanisms and consequences for engineering practice.
LO 2: Explain the concept of planetary boundaries and analyze how exceeding these boundaries affects the operating environment, with reference to the Malaysian built environment and infrastructure sectors.
LO 3: Connect global environmental trends to local manifestations in Malaysian contexts, demonstrating systems-level professional awareness.
