About this Module
What you will learn
This practical course is designed to equip entry-level hydrography drafters with the essential digital, numeracy, and practical skills required to process and present hydrographic survey data. Emphasis is placed on utilising modern digital tools to confidently handle survey datasets. Through the application of open-source software, learners will be trained to manage reduced and charted ASCII point files, automate drafting processes, and compile comprehensive bathymetric datasets. The curriculum is structured into three core modules: Bathymetry Plan Generation (30% assessment), Automation of Depth and Contour Annotations (35% assessment), and Compilation and Presentation of Survey Data (35% assessment). All procedures and final deliverables are strictly aligned with International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) standards. Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to: • Use open-source software to generate a bathymetry plan from reduced and charted ASCII point files according to IHO standards • Perform standard automated procedures using open-source software to produce contour and depth annotations according to IHO standards • Present the bathymetry dataset and relevant information in the form of a final bathymetry plan This course is highly suitable for entry-level hydrography drafters, including diploma and bachelor's degree students in geomatics or related fields, seeking a practical methodology to produce hydrographic plans without requiring prior advanced software expertise.
