Course Description

The course covers basic concepts, circuit theorems and laws in DC and AC circuits. It deals with applying the theorems and laws in solving the circuit problems. It also includes power analysis for AC circuits.

Course Learning Outcomes

1 ) Describe basic concepts, circuit theorems and laws in DC and AC circuit analysis. (C2)
2 ) Determine the power quantities in AC circuits. (C5)
3 ) Apply the basic concepts, circuit theorems and laws in solving DC and AC circuits problem. (C3)

 Syllabus

- Basic concepts: Charge and current, Voltage, Power and energy, Circuits elements.
- Basic laws: Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Law, Series resistor and voltage division, Parallel resistor and current division, Wye-delta transformation
- Method of analysis: Nodal Analysis, Mesh Analysis
- Circuit theorems: Source transformation, Superposition, Thevenin's Theorem, Norton's Theorems, Maximum power transfer

- Sinusoids and phasors: Sinusoids, Phasors, Phasors relationships for circuit elements, Impedance and admittance, Kirchhoff’s laws in the frequency domain, Impedance combinations

- Power quantities: Instantaneous and average power, Maximum average power transfer, Effective or RMS value, Apparent power and power factor, Complex power, Power factor Correction
