About this Course

Course Description

This course is divided into two parts, the theoretical concept of building performance and its application through simulation. Building performance covers investigating the passive and solar systems, energy system, rainwater harvesting, Indoor Environmental Quality - IEQ (thermal comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ), lighting, the acoustics of buildings based on Good Practice of Sustainable Building Standards like GBI- Green Building Index and MyCREST. A building performance simulation software will be utilized for assessing the design and other performance factors in buildings. Students with a design background and well versed in using CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD. Revit. SketchUp) shall have an advantage using the simulation software. Novice users will be able to use the simulation software as the UI was developed for the major public. This course will use IESVE (Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtual Environment) as its simulation software. IESVE has been chosen for this course considering its capability to cover the majority of the Course Learning Outcome for GRE719. A1 : Students are encouraged to discuss in groups for certain tasks. However, reports and marking will be on an individual basis.

A2 : IESVE is a very concise and state-of-the-art software. Registered students are entitled to the use of the university's software in the computer lab. However, a student license is available from IESVE at a heavily discounted price. Please contact your tutors for further information.

A3 : Despite there is a need for building design, the software is a complete SUITE that embed Design Module known as ModelIT. Its UI is designed for non-design-native to help them learn and create building design easily. We have several students who have managed this without a problem.

A4 : Students are eligible for a heavily discounted price for an annual license. Please be ready with your student credentials (Student ID, Official Student Email Account) for verification purposes. Paid license will expire within one (1) year. So, if you are planning to use this software for your research, plan wisely.
