Course Description

To fully benefit from this course, if will be great if you have some microbiology background. Even better if you are currently working in a laboratory. Nevertheless, the course is designed for fresh undergraduates, and anybody with basic biology knowledge and a zeal to learn can join in.

Course Learning Outcomes

1 ) Write scientific reports, risk assessment reports, guidelines and operating protocols for risk mitigation of biohazards in a biological laboratory ( A4 )
2 ) Discuss biosafety and biosecurity risk assessment and measures for the handling, containment and deactivation of biological agents based on risk analysis and best practices ( C4 )
3 ) Explain the concept of biosafety and biosecurity and relate to regulations, standards, and guidelines applicable to biological safety; examples of biohazards and biological materials with dual-use purpose ( C2 )
4 ) Conduct hazard evaluation, risk assessment and suggest risk mitigation measures to manage biorisks in a laboratory ( P3 )

 Syllabus

We will start by introducing and explaining the scope and definition of biosafety, biosecurity and biorisk and relevant concepts.

We will explore the the available framework, tools and guidelines for implementing a biorisk management system

We will learn how to perform a risk assessment for biological hazards

We will discuss risk mitigation, these are measures that can be used to reduce the level of biological risks and prevents incidences from happening

We will learn why is it important to measure the performance of our biorisk management system and make improvements

We will take a look at biosecurity issues and research with dual use concerns
