Course Description

This course equips students with basic concepts and principles of town planning. It includes concepts and principles related to town planning since the industrial revolution up to the present day. Students will be familiarized with the various planning concepts and approaches and its relationship with sustainable development. Students will also be exposed to the town planning system in the Malaysian context. In addition, the understanding of environmental management and the related environmental management tool will also be explained.

1 ) Present verbally with effective communication skills the urban planning concepts and theories, and process. ( A2 )
2 ) Explain in a report Malaysian development plans system and development control mechanism. ( C2 )
3 ) Describe the urban planning concepts and theories of town planning. ( C2 )

1.1 Concept and definitions, purpose, the scope and nature of town planning, the role
of planners and overview of other related professionals in planning.
1.2 Foundations of the present planning and the evolution of Town Planning- Islamic,
Renaissance and Industrial Revolution, colonial planning in Asia.
1.3 Origins of new town concepts in Malaysia; early settlement patterns until the
present time.

2.1 Urban structure theories
2.1.1 Concentric zone theory by Burgess
2.1.2 Sector theory by Hoyt
2.1.3 Multiple Nuclei theory by Harris and Ullman
2.1.4 Fused Growth theory by Garrison
2.2 Urban system theory
2.2.1 Central Place Theory by Walter Christaller and Losch
2.2.2 Classification of cities, land value, and rent land use theory.
