Course Syllabus

Simple Stress And Strain
Introduction to normal stress, shearing stress, axial loading, strain, Hooke?s law, Modulus of Elasticity (Young modulus), Poisson?s ratio, elongation due to
axial loading, principles of superposition, shear modulus, equilibrium and compatibility requirements in composite sections, elastic constants, relationships among elastic constants and thermal stresses.

Two-Dimensional Stress and Strain
Introduction, stress components on inclined planes, general two-dimensional stress system with practical examples, combined stresses principal planes and stresses, Mohr?s circle of stresses.

Internal Forces and Stresses
Shear force and bending moment in beams and frames. Bending stresses, shear stresses; composite beams.

Deflection of Beams
Deflection of beam using double integration and McCaulay?s method.

Torsion of Circular Shafts
Pure torsion in determinate and indeterminate solid and hollow circular shafts, twist, torsional shear strain, rigidity and strength.

Elastic Buckling of Column
Euler?s Theory on columns, slenderness ratio, short columns, slender columns, radius of gyration, Euler?s buckling load for different end conditions, effective length, limitations of Euler?s formula.
