Course Syllabus

Simple Stress and strain
Introduction to normal stress, shearing stress, axial loading, strain, Hooke’s law, Modulus of Elasticity (Young modulus), Poisson’s ratio, elongation due to axial loading, principles of superposition, shear modulus, equilibrium, and compatibility requirements in composite sections, elastic constants, relationships among elastic constants and thermal stresses

Torsion of Circular Shafts
Pure torsion in determinate and indeterminate solid and hollow circular shafts, angle of twist and torsional shear stress.

Bending and Shear Stresses
Bending and shear stresses for homogeneous and composite beams. Bending and shear stress distribution diagram.

Deflection of Beams
Deflection of beam using double integration, McCaulay’s and moment area method.

Two-Dimensional Stress and Strain
Stress components on inclined planes, general two-dimensional stress system with practical examples, principal stresses, and maximum shear stress using Mohr’s circle.

Elastic Buckling of Columns
Euler’s Theory on columns, slenderness ratio, short and slender columns, radius of gyration, effective length, and Euler’s buckling load for different end conditions.
