About this Course

This course is designed to expose the students ta the model making process. In the course of industrial design, students should learn and have the skills and creativity in 2 dimensional form and 3 dimensional form. This course level aims to develop skills in model making process using a variety of materials, hand fabrication techniques, machines and tools. It will give students the opportunity to strengthen the model making skills in producing products / prototypes effectively and confidently. This course also includes analysing the physical features of different techniques, different materials, machines and tools used. At the end of this course, students should be able and capable ta produce the product/prototypes using variety of materials, hand fabrication techniques, machine and tool

Course Syllabus

Project 1- OBJECT CONSTRUCTION USING BOARD
I. Introduction to the syllabus, course content, project title/theme, basic hand tools and power machines, schedule of work progress, project guideline, project aims and objective, attendance, final project and requirement.
2. Introduction on material, explaining on jointing techniques by using paper board (model making board, mounting board, PVC board, corrugated board and box board)

Project 2 - OBJECT CONSTRUCTION USING INDUSTRIAL CLAY/PUTTY
1. Introduction to project brief (3D solid object construction), materials, types of industrial clay epoxy, poly-putty, foam core, tools, painting and finishing techniques.
2. Demonstrate the jointing and shaping the basic foam core (paper blade, suitable sand paper grade) from the sample of technical drawing given as a template for guideline. Show the process mixture of industrial clay epoxy/ poly-putty to the object (product).
3. Demonstrate the finishing techniques, sanding the rough surface by using suitable sand paper grade, applying coating, base spray coating and 2K spray clear.

Project 3 - OBJECT CONSTRUCTION USING PLASTIC
1. Introduction on materials, (Thermostat/ Thermoplastic) types of pattern cutting and jointing techniques for plastic working process using traditional hand tools (acrylic cutter, scalpel), power hand tools (hand grinder, cordless drill, hand drill, hot air gun, blower) and power machine ( hand saw, bend saw, sand machine etc).
2. Student will be provide with sample of technical drawing as a template. Demonstration on model making process and finishing.

Project 4 - OBJECT CONSTRUCTION USING WOOD
1.Introduction on materials, ( Hard, Medium, Soft ) types of pattern cutting and jointing techniques for wood working process using traditional hand tools, power hand tools, and power machine.
2.Student will be provide with technical drawing as a template. Demonstration on jointing and finishing technique on chemical coating ( varnish, clear coating, shellac, wood sealer)

Project 5 - OBJECT CONSTRUCTION USING METAL
1. Introduction on materials, explanation on jointing, finishing and types of cutting & bending techniques in model making process (metal), guideline on project/proposal selection techniques and creativity, discussion on project.
2. Model making process (metal) cutting using traditional hand tools (metal saw) and power machine (hand grinder), jointing (bolt and nut, MIG welding, TIG welding), bending using bending machine and finishing.
3. Demonstrate the finishing techniques by using anti-rust coating, color spray and 2K spray clear.
